Cinderella Retellings

Set in Australia, Sophia Considine’s pair of stories follow the basic plot of the familiar Grimm and Perrault versions while drawing on tellings from other cultures, particularly tales such as “Yexian” (China, 9th c.) and the cognate versions from Southeast Asia that conclude with the violent destruction of the stepmother and sister(s). Also shared with these less familiar versions is the transformation of the heroine into a strong, smart woman who “makes her own magic” and succeeds in marrying the prince. “Facing the Fear” combines the fast-paced linear narration typical of fairy tales with the psychological growth of the main character that is more commonly seen in contemporary adaptations. The companion tale, “Spoiled to Death,” is the same story retold from the stepsister’s perspective.

Study Abroad - Ireland

Sophia Considine is a senior majoring in English and Creative Writing with minors in News and Media Literacy and Communication Studies. She is involved with multiple student organizations like, earthwords: the undergraduate literary review, Alpha Tau Iota (ATI), and H-Wave. Her favorite things to do are read, write, listen to music, and watch Korean dramas. After traveling to Ireland, she enjoys rainy days, maybe even more than sunny ones. Once she saves up money, she’d love to travel to Australia, Amsterdam, South Korea, Iceland, and of course, Ireland again. In the future, she aspires to become an editor for a book publishing company, so she can root for books and authors and bring them to their fullest potential.

Life as a Fairy Tale by Sophia Considine

Sophia Considine wrote this story by combining styles and research from "Cinder" by Marissa Meyer and ATEEZ (a K-Pop group). In the style of a fairy tale with classic tropes and trope subversion, this story loosely follows experiences from her own life. She hopes to return to "Life as a Fairy Tale" in the future to further flesh out the story. Copyright 2023
